The Multipurpose Drain Pipe (MDP)

The Multipurpose Drain Pipe was invented in Hong Kong by Yan & Partners. It tackles the most common failure of gravel and trench drains: blockage. The structure resists deformation and breakage under heavy loads, and it can be made in many sizes and diameters from materials that don't rust.

What it does

MDP collects and carries away groundwater while filtering it, so sand and silt stay in the ground instead of building up inside the pipe. That's why it keeps draining where conventional perforated pipes clog.

Compared with a French drain

A French drain is a perforated pipe bedded in gravel or rock. Water enters through the holes and is carried away. MDP manages groundwater the same way but barely clogs and carries heavy loads, so drainage stays efficient for longer.

Beyond traditional pipe systems

Traditional drainage suffers from clogging, ageing, lack of space, difficult maintenance and environmental impact. MDP was designed from the ground up to avoid these weak points.

• No extra consumables: installs directly in the soil layer, with no geotextile wrap or gravel bed.
• Works at any depth, adapts to different ground conditions and depths.
• Scales from very small to very large diameters.
• Many materials: plastic, stainless steel, concrete, bamboo fibre or ceramic. Materials that rust or deform are not recommended.
• Built-in natural filtration, so the water it discharges is cleaner.
